A recent survey commissioned by L’eggs Sheer Energy® shows that nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of women complain of leg pain at the end of the day. To address problems like these, Dr. Donnica Moore and L’eggs Sheer Energy® are partnering to offer women specific tips on how to boost leg health. These strategies from Dr. Donnica Moore will be available on www.leggs.com throughout the month of October to celebrate L’eggs Sheer Energy®’s National Leg Health Month.

Take 10,000 steps a day. The Surgeon General recommends the 10,000 steps a day program to maintain a healthy weight and to build bone and muscle mass, which contributes to overall leg health. Similar results can be achieved by running or jogging 30 minutes a day. Change your cross trainers every six months or so - whether the tread is worn or not - to keep your legs, hips and feet properly supported.

Boost your calcium and vitamin D intake. Calcium and vitamin D are essential to maintain bone health. Calcium fortifies bone, while vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for calcium for premenopausal women is 1,200 milligrams a day; postmenopausal need 1,500 milligrams. A balanced diet, including fish and milk, should provide enough vitamin D for most women, particularly if they’re taking a daily multivitamin and getting 20 minutes of sun exposure a day.

Stock up on lotion. Moisturize your skin twice a day to maintain its elasticity and help support cell walls, which in turn can prevent varicose veins.

Wear flats. High-heels can cause knee pain, back problems and disabling injuries like ankle sprains, increase your risk for knee osteoarthritis, according to two separate Harvard studies. Researchers also found that your risk doesn’t change whether the heel is stiletto versus chunky. If pumps are a job requirement, wear skimmers or ballet shoes to the office, then change once you arrive. Give your legs a break from heels at lunch.

Take walking breaks during plane rides. "Economy Class Syndrome," which refers to deep venous thrombosis or blood clots, has become an increasingly important health issue in recent years because people are spending more time flying. For every 90 minutes you sit in-flight, take a five-minute walking break or stand near your seat, which will aid circulation. Wearing support hosiery may also increase blood flow to the legs during long intervals of sitting.

Take showers. Exposure to prolonged or excessive heat during long, hot baths can dilate blood vessels, which decreases the return of blood from the legs to the heart and may result in varicose vein formation. Limit tub time to once or twice a week, and get out before your hands and feet start to swell, a sign you have been soaking too long.

Elevate legs. When reading or watching television, prop up legs parallel to the ground by resting them on a stool or a chair. This helps keep blood from staying in the lower legs and improves blood flow to the rest of your body.

Uncross your legs. It may be ladylike, but this can constrict blood flow. Instead, cross your ankles while keeping both feet on the ground.

Don’t smoke! Smoking increases the risk of damage to vein walls and may result in venous disease, a condition that causes pain, varicose veins and leg ulcers and osteoporosis.

Know the symptoms of leg diseases. Daily leg and ankle swelling, leg pain or tenderness, varicose veins, numbness or tingling down the legs, and skin discoloration or ulceration are signs of more serious leg problems such as an injury, deep vein thrombosis or diabetes. If you experience these or other bothersome leg symptoms, make an appointment to see your doctor.
